Are you coming to the CTEGD to work or study?
If so, this page is for you. Listed here are a few things to know before you arrive and items to attend to soon after you arrive. There is also practical information on moving to Athens, Georgia.
Please review this whole webpage.
Pay and Stipends
Be advised that it can take 4-6 weeks to receive your first payment after you have started working. Once you have started, you may contact UGA's Accounts Payable Department at 706-542-2786 to investigate your pay status.
Your pay is administered by the University of Georgia. The CTEGD cannot write you a pay check.
You will need to bring sufficient funds with you for initial living expenses.
International Students and Scholars
After visiting the CTEGD, you must register with the Office of International Education (OIE).
They will help you with UGA proceedures and answer questions. Depending
on what type of scholar you are, you may need to pay certain compliance
fees. The OIE is in the Bank of America building, downtown Athens.
The OIE's International Student, Scholar & Immigration Services (ISSIS) will be helpful for you. Much of their site is maintained by individuals who have come from other countries to study and work at UGA. You might want to spend some time exploring it. There are many international organizations and some will help you rather directly in your move to Athens.
After the OIE, you should check in with Susan Caldwell, UGA's international tax coordinator, in room 205 of the Business Services Building in the Payroll Department. Susan can advise you on whether you should get a Social Security Number.
Note: If you need to open a checking account and you don't have a Social Security Number (SSN), Bank of America does not require one.
The OIE, Business Services, and Bank of America are easy walking distance to each other.
All Students and Scholars
You will need to get a UGA Identification Card when you arrive. The
CTEGD requires a "special" card for our electronic security system. To
get this card:
- Obtain the ID forms from Linda Buffington in room 150, Coverdell Center.
- Take these forms to the Tate Student Center's UGAcard Office to get your card. See their webpage for hours, location, and the various documents you will need.
- Take your UGA card back to Linda Buffington for further processing. You can do step 4 without visiting Linda, but you will still need to see her.
-
Use the identification number on your card to apply for a UGA myID online account. This account is required by all students and employees of the University of Georgia. If you do not have a Social Security Number, leave that field blank.
