What is SCORE?
The Schistosomiasis Consortium for Operational Research and Evaluation (SCORE) has been established to answer strategic questions about schistosomiasis control and elimination.Schistosomiasis is a worm infection of about 200 million people in Africa, South America, the Middle East and Asia. SCORE's research will result in:
- Reduced morbidity due to schistosomiasis and
- Development and evaluation of approaches and tools for use by programs to control and, where feasible, eliminate schistosomiasis.
SCORE will focus on Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium.
The work of SCORE is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

SCORE's Objectives and Activities are closely aligned with the overall goal of the project.
Objective 1: Evaluate approaches to control schistosomiasis, and to eliminate schistosomiasis.
Activities in this Objective include:
- Evaluating existing epidemiologic data and capturing expert knowledge to ensure we learn as much as possible from previous studies and control efforts
- Conducting field trials of alternative approaches to control in high-transmission settings
- Attempting to eliminate schistosomiasis in a low-transmission area
- Comparing means to maintain low transmission once control is established
Objective 2: Develop the tools needed for a global effort to control and eliminate schistosomiasis.
Activities in this Objective include:
- Improving screening and survey tests for schistosomiasis in humans
- Developing and testing diagnostic tests for schistosomes in humans and snails
- Developing tools to monitor genetic changes that may indicate the development of resistance to drug treatment in areas undergoing mass drug administration
- Evaluating ways of to assess the subtle but debilitating consequences of schistosomiasis in humans and the impact of control on this morbidity
Objective 3: Work closely with other efforts to eliminate neglected tropical diseases
Activities in this Objective include:
- Ensuring the data generated through SCORE are used by programs and decision-makers
- Addressing barriers to integrating schistosomiasis control with other tropical disease control and elimination programs
